Sun, UV & Holiday Hair Care

Understanding UV & Heat Exposure

Sun exposure, artificial UV (sunbeds), heat, and environmental factors can affect the colour, condition, and lifespan of fitted hair, hair systems, wigs and toppers. Whether you’re heading on holiday or using sunbeds, following the guidance below will help protect your hair and maintain its appearance.

Both natural sunlight and artificial UV can:

  • Cause colour changes such as yellowing or warm/orange tones

  • Dry out the hair and reduce softness

  • Weaken silk, lace, mesh, and system bases

  • Shorten the overall lifespan of your hair

For this reason, extra protection is essential.

Sunbeds (Artificial UV)

Before Your Session

  • Fully cover your hair using a towel, turban, or silk bonnet

  • Ensure no hair is exposed to direct UV light

  • Avoid applying oils or leave-in products beforehand, as these can intensify heat damage

During Your Session

  • Keep hair completely protected and covered at all times

  • Avoid contact between your hair and hot surfaces

  • Take extra care with closures, mesh, and hairlines

After Your Session

  • Check hair for dryness or colour change

  • Apply lightweight moisture to mid-lengths and ends only

  • Monitor the hair over the following days

⚠️ Important:
Sunbed-related discolouration and heat damage are not reversible and cannot be corrected once they occur.

Natural Sun Exposure & Holidays

Daily Sun Protection

  • Cover hair where possible using hats, turbans, scarves or protective styles

  • Avoid prolonged direct sun exposure

  • Be mindful of heat around hairlines if you wear tape, closures, and bases

Sun Cream & Hair Protection

Sun cream is essential for your skin, but certain products can negatively affect hair.

Important Guidance

  • Avoid spray sunscreens near the hair

  • Allow sun cream to fully absorb before hair touches the skin

  • Be especially careful around hairlines, closures, mesh, and bases

  • Choose mineral-based sun creams for best protection for your hair

If Sun Cream Contacts the Hair

  • Rinse with fresh water as soon as possible

  • Shampoo with recommended products when able

  • Apply lightweight moisture to mid length to ends only

⚠️ Sun cream–related discolouration may not be reversible. Hard water blowdry treatments may be recommended in salon.

Swimming (Pools, Sea & Hot Tubs)

Before Swimming

  • Rinse hair thoroughly with fresh water

  • Apply a lightweight leave-in conditioner to mid-lengths and ends

  • Braid or secure hair into a protective style

After Swimming

  • Shampoo and condition hair as soon as possible

  • Rinse thoroughly to remove chlorine or salt

  • Dry roots, bases, mesh, or closures completely

⚠️ Chlorine and salt water can affect colour tone and dryness if exposure is frequent.

Spa, Steam Rooms & Saunas

  • Avoid steam rooms and saunas where possible

  • Do not allow hair, systems, closures, or bases to rest against hot surfaces

  • Excess heat and moisture can weaken bases and attachment points

If you’re planning a holiday or regular sun bed use

Please let us know in advance. We can:

  • Schedule maintenance around your trip, you may need a hard water crystals blow dry which will remove the orange tones in your hair if affected by the elements or sun creams. Alternatively if you're looking to tone your hair back down after natural bleaching from the sun we can book you in for an appointment to get this refreshed.

A Gentle Reminder

Sun and heat damage can significantly reduce the lifespan of your hair. With the correct protection, you can enjoy your holiday or lifestyle while keeping your hair looking and feeling its best.

If you’re ever unsure — please ask. There is always a solution.
